Fishing Rod Shimano

Fishing Excellence With Shimano Calcutta 400    by Chris Johnston

Hats off to Shimano for another class wininig product. This reel has been very well received by both salt water and fresh water fishing enthusiasts alike. This superb Shimano reel is packed with quality features. The first thing you notice when you use the Shimano Calcutta TE 400 reel is how easy it is for almost anyone to cast like a pro. And for most fisherman it is functionality that really counts. Not to say this reel is lacking features.

The Calcutta TE 400 comes with leverwind to make the most of the line capacity. It also sports one of the smoothest, easily adjusted drag in the business. Don’t be deceived by the relatively light weight of the reel either as it is heavyduty when it comes to performance.

The test of the pudding is always in the eating as they say and the best way to test the Shimano Calcutta 400 is on the water to hook up a fish. Casting with this reel is a real pleasure. On my first cast I didn’t expect to get nearly as much distance as the Calcutta produced. Thirty to forty yard casts are a piece of cake with this reel. The rod I was using was a Shimano Crucial 7.6 ft which worked well.

If you hook up to a fish that makes a nice run you will experience the awesome strength of the reel. Any fish taking the bait is soon outmatched by performance of the Shimano FE 400. The big knobs on the winder give plenty of grip and when the fish makes a run the drag keeps control providing an even pressure without jerking. The power you have on tap means you can catch fighting fish weighing up to 50 lbs.

One thing about affording a quality product like this longevity. In this respect the FE400 will not let you down. It is definetely built to go the distance. One of the nice things I enjoy about high-end Shimano gear is the way its made to last and to provide high perforance for many years to come. A special anti-rusting material has been used for the bearings in the Shimano Calcutta reels so that even if a little moisture gets in they still won’t rust up.

The addition of an audible clicker is another sign of Shimano’s attention to detail.

All up, a very nice product. Thankyou Mr Shimano.

This Shimano reel has a die-cast, non-corrosive one-piece Aluminum frame for exact alignment. This frame was built to reduce weight without losing out on strength and durability. The Reduced Profile Top Crossbar gives you outstanding control when casting and dropping lures or back baits while trolling. The Shimano Tyrnos’ oversized gears give you increased cranking power in as the oversized, extra-long handle shank affords increased torque. The Alternating Twin Pawl Anti-Reverse Design was engineered to give you hooksetting power with the smallest possible backplay. The loud clicker has an adequate amount of tension to hold big baits.

There are currently 6 Shimano Tyrnos models available in the market: TYR8, TYR10, TYR12, TYR16, TYR 20, and TYR30. If you are looking for the topless design, then the Shimano Tyrnos models 8, 10, 12, and 16 are for you. But if you prefer the Reduced Profile Top Crossbar, then you’d better get the TYR 20 and TYR30.

Fishing Reels Saltwater Spinning

Selecting Flats Fishing Tackle   by Chris Myers

Just as any mechanic will tell you that having the proper tools makes the job easier, having the proper fishing rod and reel will make your day on the water more productive and enjoyable. With hundreds of sizes, makes, and models to choose from, how does one know which one will work best?

If your budget allows for only one rod and reel, you must first determine what type of area you will be fishing most frequently and what species you will be targeting. For general < a href=”http://www.floridafishinglessons.com/flats_fishing_information.html”>flats fishing targeting redfish and seatrout, choose a spinning rod of at least seven feet that will allow you to make long casts. Select a rod with a medium action which will throw light lures a reasonable distance yet still has a fast tip to give topwater baits the proper action. If you are going to be spending most of your time targeting snook around docks or mangrove shorelines, a shorter, stouter rod will assist you in presenting your baits and pulling the fish out of the structure.

Most saltwater spinning reels are sized with a number system with a 1000 being the smallest and 8000 the largest. A 2500 size reel works well for flats fishing. Filled with ten pound braided line, this size is light enough to allow for comfortable casting all day yet can hold enough line to handle any redfish or trout.

Another important factor is to select equipment designed for salt water. Even saltwater models, however, must be thoroughly cleaned after each use to prevent corrosion.

When selecting a reel for flats fishing, a smooth drag is essential. Although I am certain many large fish have been caught on bargain reels, many have also been lost when the line broke due to a cheap and insufficient drag system. In general, as the price of the reels increase, so does the quality of the drag, the smoothness of the gears, and their resistance to corrosion. Expect to pay at least $50 to find a reel with a reliable drag and saltwater durability. To keep your reel in top working condition, wipe the exterior with a wet towel after each exposure to salt water. Periodically lubricate the pivot points and line roller bearing with a small amount of reel oil. Purchase a cover and keep it on your reel when you are transporting it to prevent scratches. A well maintained reel will give you many years of use.

Choose a rod that is heavy enough to bring the fish to the boat in a reasonable amount of time, yet light enough to allow for comfortable casting. Although you can catch small fish on a big rod, it is about as much fun as hunting squirrels with a tank. Heavy rods decrease casting accuracy and provide little sensitivity when fishing with light lures. As a result, if you are flats fishing with an oversized rod, you will miss your target with many of your casts and fail to detect subtle bites. Using a rod that is too light for the fish you are targeting, can mean extended fight times in the hands of less experienced anglers. It is especially important in the warmer months to shorten the fight time as the water has decreased oxygen content.

Spinning rods come in one, two, and even three piece models. Unless you need to break down your rod for travel, I suggest a one piece model. Higher priced rods will have more guides that have better resistance to corrosion. Although you can buy some cheap indestructible rods, spending a bit more money will get you a rod that is lighter and casts more efficiently. There are many quality rods that can be purchased between $60-100.
