Fly Tying Tools

Fishing – Fly Tying Basics   by ElmerFizz

One satisfying part of Fly Fishing, is tying ones own flies.
Even though they are readily available in shops there are many
advantages to tying your own, other than just the enjoyment
factor. The fact that you’ll be able to design and tie exactly
the fly you like. Color, size and texture will be under your
total control.

You may think the idea of tying your own flies to be a bit
daunting but it really isn’t as hard as it first seems. There’s
some basic tools you’ll need before you undertake any tying, such
as fly vice, scissors, pliers and thread. Such tools will give
you a better chance of constructing a quality fly. Keep in mind
while tying a fly that your goal is to make it seem as real as
possible to a fish.

Along with the previously mentioned tools you will also want to
have the following to hand:

* Hooks of different shapes and sizes
* Different colors and gauges of thread
* Fur from various animals such as mink or fox
* Feathers from pheasants and peacocks
* Craft cement

When your ready to begin tying your first fly you’ll want to
decide exactly what fly you would like to create. Get hold of a
detailed picture of the fly from a book or from the internet,
you’ll find many sources with pictures such as May flies, Caddis
flies etc. Once you can see the fly in detail you’ll want to get
hold of the correct materials to make it to closely resemble the
real thing as possible.

The fly tying process is started by wrapping the thread around
the hook and then attaching the appropriate fur and feathers,
making sure they are secure as you go. Keep adding the materials
till the have the desired look. Obviously there’s more to it
than this but that’s the general idea.

To help you master the art of fly tying there are classes
available or instruction videos which you can find online. These
will help tremendously along the way. Even a good book will help
speed things along. You should stick with some examples till
you’re gained the confidence and then you can start to experiment
with your own ideas. http://www.elmerfizz.com/FISHING_NEWS.html

Fly tying will come easier to some people more than others but
once mastered, tying your own flies can add another dimension to
your passion. It’s not for everyone but you’ll find you get even
more satisfaction by catching a fish on a fly you’ve just made
than one you’ve just purchased.

Fly Tying Desk

Keeping It Simple Isn’t Simple   by Andrew Cox

Ever since making “Keep It Simple” my main goal I have kept a sign that says “KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid” where I can see it all the time I’m at my desk and computer.

It is so much easier said than done. I wrote an article a few weeks ago about keeping things simple, and making it my top goal for 2008. Not a SMART goal – but certainly a behavior shift that can keep the main things the main things, and keep me from – as a former boss put it – “getting tangled up in my own underwear.” Homely little description, and funny, but if you’ve been there, you know what it means.

I have made a conscious effort to simplify things – and have been successful in looking at a number of issues and cutting through self imposed crap and being better for it. Progress is being made – some underwear has definitely been untangled.

But at the same time, it continues to be tough to untangle and get going.

A story to illustrate the point:

I am looking forward to a Fly Fishing trip with my son in law in the mountains around Lynchburg VA at Easter time. Really excited about it. I’ve been researching the flies that are most likely to catch trout at that time of the year in that area. Turns out there are a lot of them. Plus, every fly fisher has their own favorites. And the magazines all have killer patterns. And even the patterns that are personal favorites have many variations. And then the question of what sizes to tie…….. Do you see where this is going?

Every time I sit down to tie flies, a decision has to be made as to which of twelve patterns to tie – in what colors – in what sizes – in what variations. Talk about getting tied up in one’s underwear! This is supposed to be fun – not an exercise in frustration.

Uncle Jimmy – the ultimate minimalist – a product of the Great Depression and World War II -one rod, one reel, two flies that he tied just before going fishing – one brown, one black. And did he catch fish! If he could see the equipment, the materials, the books, the videos, the magazines that I have accumulated, he’d just shake his head and roll another cigarette.

How to get out of this self inflicted, fly tying rat trap? The first step is to simplify – reduce the number of fly patterns down to three – a tough thing to do. And then pick just one hook size, and then take action – start tying flies. Replace this process and analysis paralysis with some straightforward action. I’m gonna feel a lot better for it – I know it. I’m gonna keep it simple – or at least simpler.

This behavior of getting tied up in one’s underwear will happen again and again. It’s been a part of my behavior for a long time. But by keeping my KISS goal in front of me I’m going to do a better job of recognizing it and taking action to stay out of it. I’m going to have to replace the behavior I don’t want with KISS behavior.

Keeping it simple isn’t simple, particularly when our behaviors, our values, our skills all have been conditioned to complicate matters. And let’s face it- a lot of things are complicated. But we all can be more effective in every part of our lives by adopting a behavior of action, rather than of analysis paralysis. If you see your own behavior in this confession of mine, press on, persevere and open up a whole new level of effectiveness for yourself.

Want to Start Tying Flies Here’s the tools need!   by RR Smith

So your thinking of tying your own flies well you are just steps away from what I feel is one of the most rewarding hobbies around today. Tying your own flies is not only relaxing and rewarding, it can be a very productive way of putting more fish on the end of your fly line.
To get started you will need some basic tools and like most hobbies as your interest grows so will the supplies and tools you use. For now we will just talk about the basic tools you will need to get started. The following is a list of the basic items you will need to get started.

Fly Tying Vise

Hackle Pliers

Hair Stacker

Fly Tying Scissors

Thread Bobbin

Bodkin and

Whip Finisher

The Vise

One of the most important parts of your tool kit will be the fly vise when choosing your vise it is imperative that you have a vise that is easy to use and even more importantly that it holds your fly hook securely. Purchasing your fly vise is no where to try and save on your budget I recommend buying a vise of high quality remember you get what you pay for.

Hackle Pliers

Good hackle pliers will hold the feather firmly without breaking off the tips of the hackle. English hackle pliers are quite reasonably priced They are a good choice for starting to collect your tying tools. Some of they more expensive hackle pliers have revolving handles, a lot like those found on whip-finishers. Pliers with a revolving handle helps prevent the hackle from becoming twisted while wrapping the hackle around the hook.

Hair Stacker

Tying the bucktail streamers you will find a hair stacker is essential. A good hair stacker will have some weight to it selecting a brass hair stacker makes good since for this reason, as it will allow you to use less energy when straitening the hair. This is just my personal preference however.

Scissors

Make sure you purchase scissors that are made for fly tying and watch out for cheap scissors nothing can be more frustrating then trying to trim up your fly while having to fight a pair of scissors that will not cut the delicate materials that you will be using. You can usually purchase a good quality pair of scissors for around $10 to $12 dollars.

Thread Bobbin

The thread bobbin is a great tool for holding your thread and makes the wind of the thread around the hook a lot simpler then fighting the thread strait off the bobbin itself. Make sure when purchasing your thread bobbin that the barrel which the thread goes through does not have any sharp edges as this is not a good thing when winding your thread around the hook.

The bodkin

The bodkin is basically a large needle mounted on to a handle this tool become very useful for separating fine strands of material that you will want to add to your fly, cleaning, arranging and adding drops of cement. You will soon appreciate having this tool once you start fly tying.

Whip Finisher

This tool helps tie half hitch knots and for wrapping and finishing your fly once you get use to using this tool you will wonder how you ever did without it. If you are just starting out or if you have tied flies before flies you will appreciate this tool.

One of the best ways of getting started is to buy a kit just make sure that it has at least the above mentioned items
