Fishing Small Lakes and Ponds: Days To Remeber   by Craige Bottorff

As a young boy I grew up in a small town in northern Missouri. I learned to fish in farm ponds and small
Lakes. I remember tagging along with my grandparents. We used cane poles with red and white bobbers
and a brown paper bag for a tackle box. While grandma packed a lunch my two brothers and I would find
an empty coffee can, grab a spade and dig for earthworms. The rich Missouri soil would yield a bounty of
the slimy creatures and it didn’t take long to dig enough for the day. We would take along our BB guns grab our fishing poles and head to the pond for a day of cat fishing.

I can still remember my granddad showing me how to bait my own hook and attach the bobber at the right distance. I remember watching the bobber dance around on top of the water and waiting until it was pulled below the surface to set the hook.

As we got older we advanced to rods and reels. A Zebco combo was my first. I remember the day my dad surprised me and walked through the door and handed it to me. I practiced behind our house with just a weight on the line. I learned how to cast and worked on my distance and accuracy. I remember the first time I used it fishing. I could almost cast all the way across the pond.

We would walk or ride our bikes to several different farm ponds and would spend hours fishing and enjoying the outdoors. I can still remember my favorite pond. The water was fresh and clear and we could see the fish swimming. We would see a lot of large bluegill and learned we could fill our basket fairly easily. It would only take a small piece of worm or grasshopper to get the bluegill to bite. There were times I remember catching them on a bare hook.

While we were playing around in the shallow water catching bluegill we noticed that now and then a large fish would swim by. At that time we didn’t realize what kind of fish it was. We threw our bait out and watched as it swam on by. My brother was talking to a friend in his class at school about what we had seen. His friend said the fish was a largemouth bass. He said go to Western Auto and buy a lure called the Beetle Spin and give it a try. We had never used lures before but rushed to Western Auto to purchase our first lure ever. Turns out the kid was right. We started throwing the Beetle Spin out and reeling it back in, when Bang! We got our first strike. The bass we caught were bigger than any fish we had been catching. We also liked not dealing with live bait. I have been hooked on bass fishing ever since.

Fishing farm ponds and small lakes can be a lot of fun. They don’t usually have the fishing pressure and sometimes the fish grow very large. If you find a place that hasn’t been fished in a while there is no telling how large the fish have grown. While fishing larger waters in my bass boat on lakes that have had a lot of fishing pressure, it would not be unusual to catch fish that had been caught before. Fishing a farm pond that has had fewer visitors means that many of the fish have never seen a lure, and if you are fishing a large lake it can sometimes take a whole day just to find the fish. On farm ponds and small lakes it is usually much easier to locate the fish.

I have a 2 man Bass Buster Boat that is really a lot of fun on the larger farm ponds and smaller lakes. It has a trailer and can be launched almost anywhere. It is powered by a trolling motor and came with a live well and cooler. It has front and rear seats and allows the comfort of fishing from a boat.

If you have a family that loves the outdoors, fishing is a great way to get in some quality family time.
Whether the kids are catching perch or your after something larger, fishing small lakes and farm ponds is a great place for anyone to get started. It will give you and your family memories that will last a lifetime.

Fishing Rods and Reels and Fishing Lures   by Sachin Kumar Airan

Fishing has been a favorite hobby and sport for many. There is something relaxing about fishing that just can’t really be put into words. It doesn’t matter if its bass fishing, ice fishing, or fresh water fishing, the entire experience is just amazing. It’s not really just about catching the largest fish either. It’s the entire experience from beginning to end. For example, the act of hooking your bait on the fishing line can be great. How many times have you cast and feel a bump all of a sudden, then BAM! You attempt to set your hook but you miss that fish completely. Can you relate? Of course, it happens all the time.

Most people can’t figure out why they keep missing the fish. Pre-setting the hook is a lot harder than it looks. Lots of people throw in a top water lure, and then see a fish jumping on it; they jerk the rod and still miss the fish. There are specific times that warrant certain baits to use and also require setting the hook immediately. There are also other times when you don’t want to preset the hook too fast.

Fishing is probably the most exciting of all sports, at least in some people’s minds. Top water fishing is one of the more amazing forms of fishing. One of the most commonly used baits is the Zara Spook. This is probably one of the best bass fishing baits you can use. Many people throw this into the water and immediately see a fish jumping on it. They then try to immediately set the hook and miss the fish. The key to improving is patience. If you let the fish take the bait and then take your time and wait until you notice enough pressure from the fish, before you preset the hook, then you won’t lose as many fish. This method can be applied to almost all top water baits you’re using. This includes floating worms, jerk baits, prop baits, poppers, and the Zara Spook.
