Stop the Struggle in Your Life – 4 Steps to Freedom   by Bob Garner

Have you ever collapsed into your bed at the end of a hectic day and asked yourself, “What happened today? What am I doing? Is this my life?” Not getting an answer to this rhetorical question, you probably repeated your same hectic schedule the next day.

The answer that you may have been seeking was given to us by Ralph Waldo Emerson when he said, “Listen greatly unto yourself.” By that he meant, the inner you is trying to tell you something; it is trying to tell you that you are “missing” your life. Even though there are things that you need to get done, in order to provide for yourself and your family, the question is how much is your hectic lifestyle costing you, your family, friends, and even your co-workers?

Dr. Abraham Maslow, the founder of Humanistic Psychology, once wrote, “The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.” Most of us do not live in the present moment – or even occasionally visit it – because we are rushing about trying to do all the things that society says that we must do, in order to stay or get ahead. These “things” are like bait that society and our peers use to lure us into situations that ultimately create uncertainty, stress, and suffering and – like a fish caught on a hook – we struggle for freedom.

Here are a few steps to help you shun the bait, escape the “hook of struggle” and return to freedom:

1) See Your Inner Beauty: Helen Keller wrote, “The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart.” While your skills make you a unique person, it’s your inner being that makes you beautiful.

Take a moment to recognize your inner beauty – compassion, flexibility, patience, tolerance, etc. Should you inwardly feel that one of those attributes needs to be improved, don’t get down on yourself. Instead, view the needed improvement as a way to grow and expand your inner beauty. Try to include that growth in your activities throughout your day.

2) Consider Your Actions: Before rushing about, decide if what you feel you “need to do” will bring you peace or conflict. True, you have obligations, but how many of those are self-imposed? One of the greatest fears people have is the fear of being nothing. So they attach themselves to the idea of the masses that if you appear to be busy, then you must be doing something – and therefore you are “somebody.” You are “somebody” whether or not you are doing something. Through the consideration of what you “really” need to do -as opposed to what others think you should be doing – you free yourself from the struggle of the masses – and then each action you take has strength and power.

3) Watch for Awesome Moments: Allow yourself the time to experience “awesome moments.” Awesome moments are natural occurrences of beauty and wonder that happen in an instant and can never be repeated – watching a squirrel frolic on the ground or that a hummingbird flying by your window; noticing the rain falling on your car window; witnessing the brilliant colors of an evening’s sunset. These awesome moments reconnect us with the wonder of life and aid in re-centering ourselves. Awesome moments have no goal or result – they just are.

4) Shun the Bait: The entrepreneur Russell Simmons said, “If I know 15 billionaires, I know 13 unhappy people.” These billionaires are unhappy because what they thought would bring them peace and happiness – success, power and fame – instead, delivered the opposite.

The truth is that most people really don’t crave wealth or power or fame. They desire what they feel these things can provide, which is peace and happiness – yet it rarely does. As the author Stuart Wilde wrote, “No amount of success can make you comfortable, if you are uncomfortable with yourself.” Many fall prey to the false lure of success, power and fame, which they mistakenly assume will bring them peace and happiness. They take the bait and, instead of finding peace and happiness, they find themselves being whisked away and thrown into the boat of fear, stress, and worry.

As the English poet John Dryden stated, “Better shun the bait, than struggle in the snare.” However, it’s not easy, because society, peer pressure, and the desire for more makes the bait of success, power and fame irresistible. Even the most wise can find themselves taking the bait.

However, a wise person knows that – like some fish which after having been caught, jump out of the boat and return to freedom – they, too, can return to freedom. The route to freedom comes by rediscovering your inner beauty, considering your actions and taking the time to acknowledge and experience awesome moments. True freedom comes when you shun the bait and escape the hook of what others view as bringing peace and happiness and, instead, discover for yourself what delivers those attributes.

Freedom is about ceasing the struggle in your life.

Visit Hyannis MA For Summer Vacation   by Jeff Smith

Hyannis has become known as the Cape Cod town where the Kennedy family has its summer home, but there is much more to this old New England coastal town than its famous part-time residents. One of Barnstable’s seven villages, Hyannis offers great, sandy beaches; golf courses; many restaurants; historic homes; a long history; and plenty of family-oriented recreation to fill your summer vacation.

Hyannis Beaches

While you are never very far from a nice beach when you stay on Cape Cod, lodging in Hyannis will put you close to some of the most popular. On Nantucket Sound, Craigville Beach is the largest and most popular beach in Hyannis. You can windsurf at Kalmus Beach; and Veterans Beach, Orrin Keyes and Sea Street Beach are open to locals and visitors. Some Hyannis homes available for rent even have their own private beaches.

Shopping in Hyannis

Historic waterfront Main Street is the center of shopping in Hyannis, although there is also the Cape Cod Mall. Hyannis sports all manner of shops, from antiques to art galleries and clothing to boating equipment. Other shopping destinations include Cape Town Plaza, Southwind Plaza, and Festival at Hyannis.

Hyannis Dining

The main culinary attraction, of course, is fresh seafood. In Hyannis you will find an excellent bowl of steamy clam chowder, fresh lobster, excellent scallops and certainly a special catch of the day. With an active harbor, there is plenty of fresh seafood coming into the restaurants and seafood shops each day. But if seafood’s not your thing, Hyannis has plenty more to choose from, including your standard fast food chains, and cuisines representing tastes from Asia to the Mediterranean.

As far as restaurants with ambiance, you will find waterfront restaurants with views of yachts and the sunset, as well as historic sea captains’ homes that have been converted to serve your palate. Hyannis is very busy during the summer, so it is a good idea to call ahead and place a reservation if there is a restaurant you really want to try. Most restaurants are casual though some of the finer spots may require a jacket or tie. You should also note that the town’s restaurants and bars are all smoke free.

Festivals and cultural events in Hyannis

During the prime summer months, Hyannis is a Cape Cod destination for music and other festivals. Every Thursday night there is a street festival on Main Street, which hosts performers, craft vendors and activities for children. The Cape Cod Melody Tent hosts major national touring performers all summer, from jazz greats to rock legends. The Cape Cod Performing Arts Center also hosts national touring musicians as well as plays, musicals and other entertainment. There are also fun sporting events held in Hyannis, such as Cape Cod Baseball League games and Cape Cod Crusaders soccer matches.

Other Things to Do in Hyannis

There’s still so much to do when you make Hyannis your base for a Cape Cod vacation. On the water, you can go for a harbor cruise, charter a fishing boat, or take a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket. There are movie theaters for those rainy days or if there is a summer blockbuster you just can’t miss. You can go whale watching or take a tour to catch a glimpse of the Kennedy Compound. On the matter of all things Kennedy, you can also visit the chamber of commerce’s John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, which sheds light on Kennedy’s time spent in Hyannis. Among other fun activities are kite flying, surf casting and deep-water saltwater fishing, bowling, tennis, golf and mini golf.

Hyannis Accommodations and Lodging

There are many types of places to stay in Hyannis, from historic bed and breakfasts to motels, and hotels to Hyannis vacation homes. No matter which type of accommodation you choose, one thing is highly recommended – plan ahead. Many lodging choices will book early for summer, some starting in January. Among your best options for comfort and privacy are Hyannis MA vacation rentals.

Fall Steelhead Fishing on the Grand River 1 Hour West of Toronto, Canada.   by Garth Pottruff

If looking for steelhead fishing nearby, the Grand River offers a wilderness setting with low trip expenses and a great day adventure. In mid September the steelhead trout migrate up this river from Lake Erie to the barricading dam in Paris, Ontario. From Paris down, fishermen can experience some of the best steelhead fishing in southern Ontario.

The Grand River has won numerous conservation and management awards. It has almost 200 shoreline miles and is the largest river in Southern Ontario. It is one hour from Toronto or London with the 401 and 403 highways providing easy access. This short traveling distance allows urban fishermen to get up in the morning… spend the day fishing… and be in their own beds at night.

Fishermen can choose to float, fly or spin cast, with all techniques offering the chance to experience a “fish on”. Sunday to Friday is the best time, because Saturdays often experience heavy weekend canoe/kayak traffic from paddlers exploring this unique river.

The combination of swifts and pools in the Grand offers the perfect trout habitation. The average depth is 2-3 feet, with deeper pools at eight feet. The rocky bottom is a boulder range of stones… creating natural steelhead habitat. The food supply of minnows and crayfish make this river a “steelhead paradise”. To insure healthy fish populations, this section from Paris to Brantford is zoned as barb-less, bait-less, catch & release.

For the fly fisherman the Grand River has lots of maneuvering space. The Grand is wide, putting distance between the fisherman and snagging trees. This is an excellent river to wade, but private ownership restricts easy access to many sections. Chest waders are recommended for positioning around the pools. All fishermen should use the waist-belts on the chest waders when wading… because a fall in the fast swifts can quickly change a great time into a fatal ending.

A safer way to fish the Grand is with 14 ft platform rafts. They are very similar to a “clack” boat, but more stable and quiet. The platform deck space is about 64 sq ft allowing two people to fly fish, plus guide. The drift speed of these rafts offers numerous casting opportunities and the elevated platform position allows a better vision of the water-line. Platform rafts are for fishermen wishing to cover large distances with minimum wading. The Grand River Rafting Company has platform rafts available for guided fishing trips, but they are not available for self-rentals.

The steelhead trout caught range from 12 to 30 inches in length… and their weight easily snaps poorly managed lines. The spectacular runs and pole-bending hurtles makes this rainbow trout a sportsman’s delight. Even the casual observer is amazed at the large pods of steelhead sitting on the bottom. An excellent observation area for viewing steelhead pods is along Whiteman’s Creek just above the Grand River. This section is now posted and permission must be gained from the Five Oaks Christian Centre.

For fishermen visiting the Paris area… accommodations, restaurants and shops offer excellent service and food. Lures, fly-tying material and fishing equipment can be obtained from “Big Catch” bait & tackle along the Grand River. As well, this fishing shop rents out equipment and tackle to visitors wishing to try a day’s fishing.

For accommodation and food, fishermen can choose from the beautifully restored 19th century Arlington Hotel to the rustic countryside River Ridge Bed & Breakfast. If looking for a different flavour in town, dinner at the southern-style “Camp 31″offers an excellent taste bud experience.

The Grand is a unique river… it has all the amenities nearby within a wilderness setting. A fisherman can choose to float or fly fish… wade or drift… spend the day or stay a night. Whatever the choice, steelhead fishing on the Grand River is something no one should miss.
