Fly Fishing Journals – Keep Track of Your Trips   by Rick Chapo

Fly Fishing is addictive. Once you start, you’ll never stop. Whether you are going to the
local water hole or to Alaska, you should use a Fly Fishing journal to keep track of your sessions.

Fly Fishing Journals

Fly fishing is more than just fishing, it’s a peaceful, surreal activity. For many, there is almost a meditative quality to casting. For avid fly fisherman, fly fishing trips to locations such as the Battenkill River in Vermont, Green River in Utah and Letort in Pennsylvania are a must. Of course, the possibility of trips to Argentina, Alaska and other exotic locations can make ones eyes glassy. For many, however, past Fly Fishing Experiences fade from the memory with time. If you had keep a fly fishing journal, this doesn’t have to be the case.

There are famous instances of people keeping journals throughout time. Of course, Anne Frank’s Diary is the best example. In her diary, Anne kept a running commentary of the two years her family spent hiding from the Nazis. While your fly fishing sessions will hopefully be more lighthearted, keeping a journal will let you remember them as the years pass.

A good fly fishing journal combines a number of characteristics. First, it should be compact. Second, it should have a water-resistant pages and a case to protect it from the elements. Third, the journal should contain blank areas to write your notes. Fourth, the journal should contain cue spaces to remind you to keep notes on specific things. Cues should include:

1. Who you went fishing with,

2. The weather conditions,

3. The fishing conditions,

4. The flies you used, what worked and what didn’t,

5. What you caught, and

6. Lodging and places to eat,

As time passes, your fly fishing journal can be used as:

1. A guide for you or friends that return the same location,

2. Information on gear and flies to take,

3. Memories to reflect upon years later, and

4. Something to pass on to your children and grandchildren.

Keeping a fly fishing journal only requires a few minutes of writing. You can fill it out on the ride home or during a break. As time passes, your journal will become a collection of incredibly valuable fly fishing information. Imagine the look on a friend’s face after they mention going on a trip and you whip out your journal for the spot!

Glasgow Pont Hotel: Accomodation near Gariep Dam   by Joruda Kogelman

200km South of Bloemfontein in the beautiful, quiet village of Norvals Pont is the Glasgow Pont Hotel. At a mere 5km’s drive from the Gariep Dam, the hotel offers the perfect sleep over for visitors to the dam, a halfway house for motorist enroute to/from Cape Town or just travellers looking for a relaxed, historical getaway.

Since 1857 the hotel served trans-orange travellers in the Upper Karoo, and among the famouse guests, presidents Steyn and Brandt enjoyed the warm Karoo hospitality and “lekker” lamb tjops here. After falling off the pont into the freezing Orange River, Steyn and his party quickly headed for the bar and ordered some Cape brandies to get warmed up. The Glasgow Pont Hotel has many similar stories to tell!

Not only does the bar (known to locals as the Thirst) still have the reputation of “warming up” travellers in the icy karoo nights, it also serves ice cold beer (you’ll need one on a hot summer’s day), whiskey, Cape wines and other refreshments and spirits. The Thirst’s biggest claim to fame is the fact that it host the longest bar in the Northern Cape, measuring 34 meters. In the time the Gariep Dam was built the bar was extended 3 times to host all the dam builders , engineers etc.

The accommodation is fit for a king, and his family, and his pets (all pets are welcome, if accompanied by atleast 1 human)!! The extended family room offers a queen size bed and 1 bunk bed, but if you have a really big family another 2 bunk beds can easily be added in the spacious room at no extra cost. No King can complain about that! Other rooms include the normal family room and the “dog house” – both with queen size beds and enough space. All rooms have wall heater panels, fans and coffee and tea making facilities.

Outside your car is parked in a secure parking area, and the braai area in the courtyard with tables and seating is ideal for the tired traveller to relax. Even the smokers can take a “smoky” in the shade.

The Glasgow Pont Hotel caters for all walks of life and is central to many activities:

HUNTING: The Karoo is famous for extended hunting fields and several game farms in the area has hunting packages available. The hotel management can point you in the right direction, and even offers a walk in freezer.

FISHING: For Fly Fishing and carp fishing the Gariep Lake covers more than 365 square km’s of unequal fishing spots. Don’t worry about “letting the big one get away”, if you forgot your gear, you can hire it at the hotel.

HISTORICAL WALKS: Take a guided tour to places of interest from the boer war, starting at the hotel where historical documents and photo’s are displayed. The area surrounding Norvals Pont is rich in history, from the great “Trek” when farmers used the Scotsman, John Norval’s Pont to get their oxwagons over the mighty Orange River.

Star Gazing: How about a quiet, lightless, pollution free hour or two spent on your back, gazing at the millions of stars above – Medicine for the soul!

Other nearby activities include: Game viewing (at any of the 3 nearby reserves under the control of the National Nature Conservation Department); water sports at the Gariep Dam; Horse riding; sailing and river adventures, just to name another few.

Glasgow Pont Hotel has it all, however, if just thinking about all the activities leaves you sweating, you can simply relax to the cry of the fish eagle and enjoy a glass of the finest wine while you watch Egyptian Geese fly past.

Luxury Fly Fishing Vacations

Panama Destinations for the Angler on Vacation   by Captain Santiago

There is a lot of variety to be found in Panama destinations for the traveler. The places you can see and the experiences you can sample are abundant and range from sophisticated urban experiences to wild adventure travel. A favorite and growing destination for vacationers in Panama is the province of Chiriquí. This small province, about the size of South Carolina boasts over a dozen different micro-climates from coast plains to mountain cloud forests. Unique among the Panama provinces, Chiriquí is a place where you can spend the morning on a beach that you have all to yourself and the afternoon wrapped in a sweater exploring a highland jungle.

Chiriquí’s coastline is anything but monotonous. There are glistening dark volcanic beaches that stretch for miles and miles. There are hidden coves with pearl white sand and dramatic cliffs that end in rocky shores with tide pools and crashing surf.

One of the most popular activities in the province is fishing. Of all the Panama destinations, Chiriquí is the only one where you can be deep-sea fishing for giant marlin or sailfish one day and the next day be fly-fishing in a mountain stream. For the truly intrepid, there are also lakes located far into the highlands where you can enjoy the quiet pleasure of casting a line for freshwater species as well.

David is the capital of the province and is the third largest city in the country. While not a metropolis by any stretch of the imagination, the city offers fine dining, shopping, casinos and coffee shops to entertain you. The Chiriquí Highlands are an hour away by car. In the highlands, you can sample coffee after a tour of one of the many plantations, enjoy world-class bird watching with experienced guides, go white water rafting on rivers the equal of any in the world, and, for the brave of heart, zip-line through the forest canopy on an incredible journey through the rain forest.

The city of David has a wide range of accommodations including the brand new Hotel Ciudad David, a 150 room property with an excellent restaurant. There are dozens of small economical hotels that offer clean, safe rooms and some tasty local cuisine. The gastronomic scene in David is in its infancy but you will be able to find several ‘new Panama’ bistros with professionally trained chefs who are bringing originality and quality to their treatment of fresh local ingredients. Additionally, David has quite a few Cantonese restaurants, several Italian and a very good Peruvian restaurant as well. Local fare or ‘tipica’ can be found on every street and will serve up some fast, basic and wholesome meals at a fantastic bargain price.

If the purpose of your vacation is mainly fishing in Panama, the half-dozen lodges around Boca Chica and the outlying islands can give you an entirely different experience than the rather hustle and bustle atmosphere of the little city of David. Many of the lodges and resorts in this area are luxurious indeed and will deliver a world-class kind of stay. While it is true that you will be more or less stuck at your destination once you arrive there, the lodges and resorts take special care to provide good food that focuses on the abundant fresh seafood in the area. Many of the resorts have private beaches and swimming pools and all will arrange trips to see the sights in the mountains or a city excursion for you.

Of course, your trip to Panama will naturally include the most popular of Panama destinations–Panama City, the hub of the Americas. Panama City is a sophisticated, bustling urban landscape that serves as the second largest capital of finance in the world. The commerce that passes through the Panama Canal brings to this multi-cultural city all the variety you would expect. Restaurants of every conceivable twist, including all of the familiar and many of the not-so-familiar. Panama City has history to uncover in Casco Viejo, engineering marvels in the canal and the ultra-modern architecture, and shopping that will satisfy even the most jaded world traveler.

Fly Fishing Alaska

Experience Alaska King Salmon Fishing   by Bob Hamilton

If you are looking for a great fishing experience, Alaska king salmon fishing is what you are looking for. Alaska is a great place to have a vacation with family and friends. You will have a lot of fun teaching your family or friends how to fish all day long. You do not need to be an expert in Alaska king salmon fishing to get a really big catch. But to make a good catch you need a few tricks, especially when fishing King salmon, sometimes called Chinook. You do not need a fishing guide to make a catch.

The first thing you need to know about fishing for king salmon in Alaska are the traits of the king salmon species. During spring they migrate nearer to the lake or river shore, this is where you need to be to catch them in spring. The bait will depend on the type and temperature of the water and where you are doing your fishing. The other thing to consider is the time to go fishing for king salmon. The best time is during dawn, but their appearance really makes it possible to catch them any time of day.

Use cut herring as bait. Pay very close attention to the fish movements. Another good idea is to hire the services of fish finders who are usually right when it comes to finding fish. Do not forget most of them have been doing this work almost all their life.

The tide determines at what trolling speed you can go. When the tide is high you need to increase the speed. Use down riggers to estimate the depth and where the salmon are feeding. Online you will find more information on how to catch the king salmon. But there is nothing new that you do not already know if you have been fishing for awhile. In Alaska there are people who can train you how to fish. All you have to do is get to Alaska and have the time of your life while fishing.

Alaska king salmon fishing is a lot of fun. You can also fish for different types of fish such as kwikfish, flatfish, egg cluster and countless more. Alaska is one place which will give you a memorable vacation. Your family and friends will always thank you for flying them there. Fishing will provide you with an opportunity to compete amongst yourselves, and to see who gets the biggest catch to win bragging rights throughout the vacation. This is definitely a relaxing and fun place to go for fishing.

People who love fishing normally make several trips to the Alaska king salmon fishing sites and do not worry about the cost. Most are able to afford the rates, as they are generally somewhat reasonable and worth every penny you spend. The fishing sites have a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere that can take away all your thoughts and leave you feeling calm and stress free. The people there also are very much friendly and welcoming to visitors. This is truly a fish area where you can have a great time and the food is also fantastic. Besides fishing, take time to enjoy the other sights all over Alaska as well.

Colorado Fly Fishing Resorts

Your Breckenridge Ski Vacation   by Scott Palat

You’ll be welcome with open arms in Breckenridge, Colorado. Breckenridge ski resort offer the world’s finest powder and terrain anyone can imagine. Half of the slopes at Breckenridge ski and snowboard resort are for beginners, while the other half are for moderate to extreme skiing. Breckenridge is the only ski area to offer this much skiing for all types of ability levels.

The town of Breckenridge is just like you would dream about on the way to your ski vacation. The town has a Main st. with stores, restaurants, and variety. You won’t be disappointed as you stroll down Breckenridge’s Main Street; the main area is about ½-mile long and makes for a lovely walk during the daytime or nighttime.

As far as resorts go, you can stay in a classy hotel and pay big bucks, or you can stay just outside of town nestled in the Rockies. Many condos are located a few miles down the road on RT. 9 otherwise known as Main Street.

If you decide to book a condo out of town, you’ll get a better sense of what a mountain vacation is all about. On top of this advantage, you can also expect to pay significantly less than if you stay in the busy town of Breckenridge. Be prepared to breathe the fresh Colorado mountain air. It’s truly invigorating!

As the seasons change in Breckenridge, Colorado your outdoor options expand and contract. Once Spring comes, the skiing gets better and the temperature goes up. Yes, it still snows hard in the Spring time.
The only difference is the quality of the snow. It tends to be wetter than the winter when it is dry-fluffy snow. Either way, it’s great and you’ll love the Spring time snow as much as the Winter snow. After all, the base of Breckenridge in April is about 60 inches deep.

Summer time in Breckenridge is truly a beautiful time! You can fish the streams for Rocky Mountain trout or you can mountain bike, raft, boat (Lake Dillon) or just relax in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. There will never be a boring day during your Breckenridge ski or summer vacation.

Fly Fishing is a very enjoyable sport to engage in during the Summer time. It seems like every stream or lake in the Rockies, houses some of the largest trout in the world. Since fishing season is only 5-months out of the year, the trout seem to jump right on to the hook. Just kidding of course! It’s not that easy to catch Trout, but if you use the right flies, you just might find the statement above to be true.

Mountain bike trails are everywhere, but be careful!! Be sure to have a map and enough food & water in case you get lost. The smartest thing to do is mark your course with sticks in the ground if you have any doubts about not getting back home or to your vehicle.

As long as you are sure of this, you’re going to have a great time. Breckenridge offers mountain bike trails that go to the tops of mountains and down to the valleys. The scenery is breathtaking and without a doubt, you’re going to love mountain biking in Breckenridge, CO.

As far as rafting goes, there are many options within 20-miles of Breckenridge. The water flows highest around mid-July because of all the snow which has melted from the mountains. There are plenty of guided trips who will help you navigate through the rivers.

Once you experience all the Breckeridge has to offer, you’ll surely come back every year to enjoy yourself again and again. Also, did you know the state of Colorado has more blue sky days than any other state in the U.S.? It’s true!
