How to Become a Freelance Writer   by George S.

Perhaps you are interested in a career as a freelance writer, but worry whether you live in one place. Well, think again. Freelance writing is a job you can do anywhere. It is true that if your house is close to newsrooms in New York, you may be able to use their proximity to some advantage. But many, many freelance writers are working successfully further, and in many cases enjoying a better lifestyle in the places where they live.

Take Ron Irwin, for example. An American, Ron freelances a little beach house in Cape Town, South Africa. Most of his work remains for the North American markets. Consider Vella Corinne, a native of Malta in the center of the Mediterranean Sea. From this island steeped in history – the Order of St John was based here and the temples are supposed to be older than the pyramids – Travel writing features and lifestyle.

Writers in locations such as these, far from being a serious disadvantage, can actually benefit from a number of advantages. For starters, these authors are in an excellent position to write on their own sites, people and culture. In addition, costs of living are often less expensive than for writers in major cities. And as if that were not enough, how about fresh air and clean?

Authors working from remote locations usually live in a cleaner, more peaceful environment, and live closer to May and outdoor recreation. Vella reveals how he likes the warmer days: “Once I pack my computer, simply head to the beach. Distances are short and, on the island is small, I’m always near the center of what happening here. I manage my free time in ways that could not if I lived in an occupied city.”
Twenty years ago writers in remote locations often frustrated by the slowness of communicating with editors across the world. Always take months for a response from a publisher. Pending a response to a question was almost as exciting as watching grass grow!

In recent years, the availability of the Internet has made it easier than ever for freelancers to communicate instantly with anyone, anywhere in the world. In my own example above I traveled through a small number of countries over a period of three weeks and was able to conduct my freelance work at the same time. Many of my clients do not even know he was “moving.” Little did they know that between receiving and responding to your posts, I fish in the lake and forest walks. I could easily stay in touch with important contacts both write and send my newsletter.

But you know what is more exciting? While I was traveling my web site has been hard at work all the time, day and night. Even while flying at thirty thousand feet, take a nap, actually sold a lot of writing books and related products. Now, if this is not the dream of becoming an independent professional not really know what it is! Such accomplishments are certainly not possible before the advent of electronic mail and World Wide Web.

Kathy Crockett freelances from Gisborne, New Zealand, on the east coast of North Island. She talked about technology that makes the difference when you work from the location of this type. “It is a town of 35,000 inhabitants,” he explains, “the nearest to the international deadline, and the first city in the world to see the sun each day. The size of the city near the three hours journey on the roads wind… Internet, mobile phones… technology lets me be where I want to be… and other nonsense to think that I’m where I want! “

Of course working remotely is not always easy and there are a number of challenges that writers typically face. Isolation is a common problem. Vella explained to me that she has a way of dealing with it. “Sometimes it’s like a totally atomized existence. I balance that by scheduling some face time “every day” he said. I agree with it. Sometimes we must make a conscious effort to spend time with family, friends or other writers.

Another problem may be difficult with the technology. Find a repair shop in May PC virtually impossible. Access Internet may be unavailable or unreliable. There are many, many places in the world do not even have telephone lines, however, not to mention access e-mail. You can work as a freelance writer from these locations, but not as convenient. If you have another option in which you live, always try to choose a town that has telephone lines with reliable Internet access.

And this applies to work during their holidays. Check the available technology in advance. In the example of my previous trip, I received a surprise. There was no phone line or email access at home. My initial panic subsided when I discovered not far from a phone. In freezing weather, I was walking on the road. If you press the button to send my newsletter my notebook computer is connected to a public telephone.

Are writers in remote locations with a severe disability? No way! I am sold on the concept that you can work as a freelance writer from anywhere. And while you will face some challenges, none of them insurmountable.

So if you are looking for a career you can do anywhere, look no further. The writers I have mentioned and many others are working successfully wherever they are. And if you can. Open your notebook. Start writing. You can start to build a rewarding career as a freelance writer today.
