Fly Fishing Fyn

Bats are also called the flying fox.   by Farid

The bats forelimbs are webbed and developed in to wings. This makes the bat the solitary mammal, naturally capable of true and sustained flight.

Other mammals which are said to fly, such as flying squirrels, gliding possums, colugos, don’t fly but rather slither. And that too is for short distances.

As other birds, bats don’t flip their complete forelimbs, but they flap their spread out digits, which are very long and covered with a thin membrane or patagium. Read more Vinduespudsergondol

There are nearly 1100 bat species. About 70 percent of bats are insectivore, and their diet consists mainly of insects and similar small creatures. Most of the rest are frugivores and eat fruits.

Bats perform significant ecological roles such as pollinating flowers and dispersing fruit seeds. Various tropical plants depend entirely on bats for the delivering of their seeds.

The smallest bat is the Kittis Hog nosed bat and it measures 29 to 33 mm and weighs about 2 g.

The largest bat is the Giant Golden crowned flying fox and it has a wing extent of 1.5 m and weighs about 1.2 Kg.

There are two suborders of bats such as Mega bats and micro bats. There are a few discrepancies among the two suborders of bats.
1. Microbats use echolocation and megabats do not.
2. Microbats lack the claw at the second toe of the forelimb.
3. The ears of the microbat do not close to form a ring. The edges are separated from each other at the base of the ear.
4. Microbats lack underfur. They are either naked or have guard fur.
Mega bats eat fruit, nectar and pollen. Most microbats eat insects. Other bats feed on blood of animals, small mammals, fruit, frogs, fish, pollen or nectar. Read more Totalentreprise Fyn

The eyes of most microbat species are small. They are poorly developed leading to poor visual acuity. Nevertheless none of the bat species are blind.

Bats hunt at night to elude competition with birds. Bats travel very far in search of food. They could travel as far as 800 km.

The bats wings are much thinner than that of birds.

A bat might live above 20 years.

A newborn bat depends on its mother’s milk for sustenance in a few weeks the new bat is expected to fly and find food for it.
