Great Places to Go Fly Fishing   by Pete Tulley

With the beautiful summer weather coming into full force in late July, there is no better time in the world to get out and go Fly Fishing. When looking for some summer fun, Fly Fishing is the perfect hobby, an unbeatable pastime that will get the fisherman out into the wild where he (or she) can enjoy both nature and sport. No matter where in the United States one lives, there are many great and reachable places to go Fly Fishing; all states have places where fly fishing can be done easily and successfully, and a the following are just a few of the best.

First, there is much great fishing to be had in the vastness of Minnesota. A state full of wilderness, Minnesota is a flawless destination for the fisherman. The area around Missoula is some of the best in the state, with hundreds of streams and rivers so that the fisherman can find a place where he can be alone, a place he can think of as his own. While not the most exotic destination, the scenery is classic and beautiful, with rugged forests and clear water for hundreds and hundreds of miles.

Second, and also in the north, is the Alaskan Peninsula. It is a bit further away unless one is from Canada or the far reaches of Russia, but Alaska has a breathtaking wilderness that is filled with salmon–it boasts some of the best salmon fishing in the world in places like the Katmai National Park and Preserve. With all of the mountain and coastal streams, Alaska, like Minnesota, offers plenty of options so the fisherman can find a place to claim and fish alone or with friends.

Third, and much warmer and more exotic–at least in feel–than the first two, are the Florida Keys. While fly fishing may not be the same exotic type of fishing that is talked about in Hemingway’s novel of the coastal waters, it is a type that gets one much closer to the water and the fish themselves; it is a style of fishing that brings the fisherman right into nature and makes them feel a part of it while they enjoy the sport. The warm waters of Florida provide long days and plenty of colorful fish.

Finally we get to one of my very favorites, the creeks and rivers of the North Georgia Mountains. Almost everyone has heard of Blue Ridge Georgia but some of my favorite fly fishing spots are in the little town of Ellijay Georgia, just south of Blue Ridge. There are a number of fly fishing guides for hire in the area for those that are new to fly fishing and there are numerous stocked rivers and streams ready to challenge the experienced adventurer and fisherman.
