Make sure that if you buy this kayak you are aware that it is exactly as the name implies. You are purchasing a fishing kayak, not a kayak for touring. It has a variety of great features, but some people have mentioned that it is a heavy kayak, weighing in at nearly 70 pounds, and if you’re under 5′ 9″ you could potentially have a difficult time using the single side carrying handle because the kayak is so wide.
One of the best things about the Lifetime Sport Fisher kayak is the fact that it is great for fishing and as one reviewer put it, you don’t need to deal with the hassle of licensing it, hooking up lights, dealing with trailers, and most importantly there are no taxes to pay. The kayak was a perfect fit for one couple as they could lift it and maneuver it together. Being in their 50′s they mentioned that they weren’t as strong as they use to be, but could easily lift it into the truck camper.
They went on to say that once out in the water, they actually tried to tip it over and gave it quite a rocking but it never flipped. Even without additional cushions or padding it is very comfortable, and according to the couple it is one of the best purchases they have made in a long time.
One reviewer however, who wasn’t as happy with the Sport Fisher kayak stated that it is great for solo or tandem fishing, but it is bulky and difficult to carry alone. In addition, the dry storage in the back is actually just a hatch into the inside of the kayak. But the main complaint was that the storage hatch and the rod holders aren’t water tight and they will let water leak inside. During one particularly rainy trip, the kayak was filled about a third of the way with water on the inside.
The main hull of the kayak is designed well with some nice features such as the four fishing pole holders and the clips to hold your oars, but some people feel that the chair design is kind of lacking. There is no bottom cushion and the back support can be a bit tricky depending on your size. This is by no means a luxury kayak, but then again if you intend to use this kayak for fishing you probably don’t intend or want a luxury kayak anyhow.
Depending on your size, fitting three people in the kayak may prove challenging. In addition there is a cool molded hole in the rear of the frame for a motor mount if you choose to use one. Being very sturdy and an overall good quality fishing kayak, many people are extremely happy with their purchase, and would highly recommend it to others. It comes at a great price, and no doubt will work well for nearly anyone who loves to fish.
