Go with a sinking line. You’ll get your fly down quickly and maintain direct contact with it. Your line will also be less affected by surface currents and flotsam. Another plus is the casting efficiency gained with small diameter sinking lines when you are dealing with wind.
You won’t need to spend money on tapered leaders for this rig. A straight section of mono attached to a leader butt at the end of your line will work fine. Keep it SHORT…as short as conditions (water clarity) allow. You won’t end up with tangled leaders, and you’ll be able to quickly re-rig should you bust off.
With this setup, you won’t need extra weight on your fly. For example, if using Clouser Minnows, make some lighter by using smaller diameter eyes or use the non-toxic, lead-free eyes.
