All About Fishing Tackle- Expand Your Fishing Knowledge

Fishing is one of the most ancient practices on this earth, dating back to as early as the Paleolithic period. Though the term fishing actually refers to the act of catching fish in the water bodies, even the practice of catching other aquatic animals like mollusks, echinoderms, crustaceans etc. is usually regarded as fishing.

For many countries especially those having long, broken coastline such as the countries of Western Europe, fishing is one of the leading occupations of the people. In these countries fishing is practiced in a large scale and is of commercial type. The livelihoods of the people largely depend on fishing. In commercial fishing, large vessels are employed which can use larger nets.

Acoustic fish finders, radars, position finders and other much expensive modern equipments are used to track don fish. Generally there are four methods by which modern commercial fishing vessels catch fish. These are Drifting, Trawling, Seining and Lining.

Drifting nets are used to catch pelagic fish by hanging the net vertically just a few meters below the water surface where the fish will swim into the net. Trawling, on the other hand involves fishing by using a huge bag like net whose mouth is kept open by head beams.

The trawling net usually goes deep underneath and has proved to be the most effective method of catching demersal fish. Besides marine fishing, fishing in rivers, lakes and other inland water bodies has also become commercial in character. The salt water fish and sweet water fish have distinct characteristics of their own and each has its own market.

With the invention of modern fishing equipments, commercial fishing has become very popular and is a high profit making business today. But apart from large scale commercial fishing, traditional small scale fishing and recreational fishing are also popular among many people.

Traditional fishing practices include fishing in a small scale with traditional tools and instruments like Fishing Rods, fishing tackles, arrows, harpoons, throw nets, drag nets, etc.

This type of fishing is practiced by individual fisherman and is of subsistence type. On the other hand recreational fishing is a type of fishing mainly practiced for pleasure. This type of fishing has almost no commercial value. Some people having a knack for fishing, often treat is as an amusement.

However, this type of fishing has to abide by certain rules and maintain licensing restrictions. The most popular forms of recreational fishing are done with the help of Fishing Rods, hooks, reel, line and a variety of baits. The process of catching fish by using hooks is known as angling and it is a common method used in recreational fishing.

On the other hand the term Fishing Tackle refers to any equipment that the fisherman uses while fishing. Fishing has always been a popular practice among men and with all the new techniques and equipments, its popularity is steadily increasing over the years!

Fishing tackle is as varied as the fish we’re trying to catch.  Having a wide selection of fishing lures and terminal tackle will ensure that you have the right supplies for the conditions and terrain you may come across.

What end tackle (elastic etc) would you recommend for pole fishing?

I am new to pole fishing but not rod fishing and have a fox conspiracy pole but dont know where to start with the end tackle. I am looking at bagging up on small to medium fish (mixed).

For UK style pole fishing……….

Daiwa (White, 6-10) Hydrolastic Pole elastic, if elastic ain’t already fitted

http://www.mullarkeys.co.uk/fishing/poles-and-accessories/poles-fishing-accessories/0/daiwa/8331/

Also this Middy stuff in 4-8 (assuming you’ve got more than 1 Top kit to play with):

If you don’t know how to attach the stuff, there’s a good guide here:

http://www.maggotdrowning.com/pole/elasticating_a_pole.htm

Rig line… same sort of stuff you use for Rod fishing (e.g. Berkley Trilene Mono, Shakespeare Aerial Pro / Omni3000, etc).

For pole floats, these things are highly regarded (and don’t break as easily as some others, so i’ve heard):

These pole float rubber things to attach them to the line

tub of pole shot

Hooks to nylon from usual sources – Mustad / Kamasan / Drennan, etc

There are ready made pole rigs available, such as those by Dinsmores, but reviews i’ve seen about them weren’t too complimentary (line too thick, etc)

Fly Fishing Backing

Fly Fishing Backing
Fly Fishing Backing

Did you ever plan that fishing trip to the big lake, then when you got there you realized you had no idea where to start fishing? Too much ground to cover, right? Let’s break it down a bit to simplify it.

The first thing you want to look for is cover; something that ‘looks’ like a good place for a bass to hide. Depending on the time of day, they will probably be there.

Quite often, you will see stumps and reeds sticking up out of the water. These are easy and obvious spots to fish, and you should definitely fish them. But you also want to look for something that is not always so obvious: grass.

Sometimes you will see grass sticking up near the shore line, and it may extend out from the bank several feet, maybe even many yards. You want to fish these areas very thoroughly early in the morning and in the evening. Also, fish these areas as well on cloud covered days and cooler days when the bass may stay shallow.

Don’t pull your boat in at a high speed, just get close enough where you can drift in or use a trolling motor to quietly work your way to the cover. It’s very easy to spook fish in grass near the shore.

Be sure to look in the water around you and under you to see how far out the grass extends. You will likely find some other vegetation, like hydrilla, which is a good place for bass to hide. These areas need to be fished thoroughly.

As the day goes on, the fish will usually start moving away from the shore to deeper waters. If the grass and hydrilla extend out quite a way from the bank, start backing away from the bank in search of the bass that are moving to deeper water.

Don’t get in a hurry. Use a good weedless lure and work it very, very slowly through the grass. Painfully slow. I suggest you use plastics that will sink slowly. This way you can come across the top of the grass slowly, and the bait will fall into holes in the vegetation. When this happens, hold on tight.

Let the bait sink and don’t move it for 10 or 15 seconds, or more. Then, when you do move it, just twitch it a little by jiggling the tip of your rod. The idea here is that you are trying to get your lure to imitate an injured bait fish. This is a deadly action that will entice even the most stubborn bass.

You can also fish the edge of the grass with other lures that are not so weedless, as long as you be careful not to cast the lure into the grass. This will only frustrate you with hang ups and lost lures. For this, I would recommend spinnerbaits and crankbaits.

So, next time you go the that ‘big’ lake, try this method as a starting point. It should help you get on the bass quickly and make for a much more enjoyable trip.

Namibia’s Cape Fur Seal

When you think of Africa & its incredible wildlife you almost inevitably conjure up images of endless plains, scattered with antelope huddling together under the deceptively disinterested gaze of the ‘king of the beasts’.  It may then surprise you to learn that Namibia is also home to more than half the world’s population of Cape Fur Seals. A population of approximately 1 million these intelligent and gentle creatures grace the cold Atlantic coastline of this desert dominated country.

They can be found almost anywhere along the 1,200 km coastline, but primarily are located in colonies dotted up and down the coast. The largest of these is the famous Cape Cross Seal colony, where December’s breading season can see populations in excess of 100,000!  Crammed onto the little beach a packed and noisy throng of barking mothers and lost, crying pups fight against the constant roar of the ocean for attention, this makes for a memorable – if smelly – stopover.   The females grow to about 90kg & have a life expectancy of about 20 years, while the males prior to breading pile on the pounds, growing to an immense 350kg.

Once on land the males will often not eat for up to 3 months as they use up their reserves of stored energy to defend their harem of females against rogue male impostors. The energy needed to survive this fast requires them to eat up to 14% of their body weight per day in the period leading up to the breeding season. This results in a total estimated consumption of 900,000 tonnes per year, which is 300,000 tonnes more than the whole Namibian fishing quota for the year.

This inevitably sets man against animal with annual culling still being a very contentious issue. Research though would indicate that only half of the seals diet is made up of commercially viable fish and their feeding has little to no effect on the bottom feeding fish stocks. Still the Namibian Government has this year granted a quota of 86,000 seals to be culled, the majority of these being pups and the remainder being bulls, killed for their genitals which are sold in the Far East as an aphrodisiac.

Last week my family & I popped down to the coast to spend a little time learning more about these fascinating creatures. Our base was the resort town of Swakopmund, staying in the comfortable and homely Sea Breeze Guest House, but the real base for seal viewing is the port town of Walvis Bay, located just 30km south of Swakopmund. Besides being Namibia’s main deep sea port, Walvis also offers a number of leisure based boating activities from catamarans to the very popular sea kayaking.

We chose to travel with Mola Mola Coastal Safaris, one of the oldest and most reputable operators at the coast.

We departed the yacht club at nine for a three and a half hour trip in search of the seals and dolphins and we were not to be disappointed. No sooner were we away from the quay side than we spotted an old friend of Wally’s, our captain and vastly experienced guide for the day. Sally the seal hopped aboard our shiny new motor launch with the ease of an acrobat, and with the aid of a sardine bribe let Wally talk us through her layers of waterproof fur, whiskers and powerful flippers.

Our boat was soon joined by a school of Heavyside Dolphins, indigenous to the west coast of Africa and they jumped and raced our boat, fighting for space under the prow. We were also lucky enough to spot a group of Bottlenose Dolphins who also were good enough to put on a spectacular show of speed and athletic prowess.  Pelicans swooped over the boat, eager to grab a fish on the wing from Wally’s outstretched hand, seagulls whirled and a cheeky cormorant settled on the boat, waiting patiently for breakfast.  All this feeding left us feeling rather peckish too, so right on queue the fresh oysters, snacks and champagne were served, making for the perfect end to the perfect boat trip!
