Fly Fishing Saltwater

Fishing on Prince of Wales Island    by Jay Bryce

Prince of Wales Island and surrounding marine waters offer an excellent opportunity for both saltwater and freshwater fishing. The extensive road system provides access to coastal areas, as well as many streams, rivers, and lakes.

Almost all fish present in the waters of Prince of Wales Island are “wild.” However, there are a couple of hatchery programs on the island.

The Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association produces several runs of hatchery-bred fish. Coho salmon return during June/July to the short section of stream at the Neck Lake outlet, on the northeastern portion of the island, near Whale Pass. Luck Falls Sockeye salmon also return to this area. Summer-run chum salmon return to the Kendrick Bay area near the southeastern corner of Prince of Wales Island.

The Prince of Wales Hatchery Association has a hatchery facility near Klawock. It produces both coho and sockeye salmon that return to the Klawock River.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulates all sport fishing. Be sure to check the regulations and purchase the necessary license before you fish. You can buy a license online from Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G), or purchase one at a tackle shop or convenience store in one of the larger communities. Often lodges and outfitter and guides do sell licenses. Note: Some stores close on Sunday, or are only open between 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, so plan accordingly.

Don’t forget your camera, and remember to dress in layers with clothing, as hypothermia can kill. Rain gear is a must, and hip boots and chest waders should be considered when fishing rivers and streams. When fishing in freshwater make sure you have insect repellent and be aware of bears.

Please help us protect aquatic resources for future generations to enjoy and use by only harvesting what you really need. Please don’t litter, and remember “pack it in, pack it out.”

The Alaskan Office of Subsistence Management website has information on current Subsistence regulations and use determinations for the harvest of fish and shellfish on federal public lands and waters in Alaska by local residents.

Coho (silver) salmon, sockeye (red) salmon, pink (humpy) salmon, and chum (dog) salmon are present in freshwater, along with steelhead, rainbow and cutthroat trout, and Dolly Varden char.

King salmon do not spawn in streams or rivers on the island, but occasionally do stray into them. Most of the drainages on Prince of Wales Island contain spawning runs of either coho, pink, or chum salmon, as well as cutthroat trout, and Dolly Varden char.

Steelhead (sea run rainbow trout) and sockeye salmon are often present in drainages that have lakes. Generally, fish that people catch and call rainbow trout are really young steelhead that migrate to saltwater. Resident, freshwater dwelling rainbow trout are found upstream of falls that are barriers to sea run fish and sometimes found in lakes.

Thorne RiverFreshwater fish species are typically sought after from March through October depending on the species. The timing of fish runs can vary from drainage to drainage, and from year to year depending on rainfall and streamflow levels. Some drainages may deviate as much as a month on either side of this schedule.

Most communities have lodge operations or outfitter and guide services for freshwater fishing, and information can be found on the internet. For the do-it-yourself angler, there are the choices of bringing your own vehicle to the island on the ferry system, or renting a vehicle on the island to explore the many rivers, streams, and lakes. Road turnouts along streams and rivers often have unimproved, primative trails leading to fishing holes. You could bring your own canoe or kayak to fish from, or rent one in the larger communities. Forest Service rental cabins are typically located on lakes, and a john boat with oars is generally included in the rental fee.

Lures are generally used to catch salmon, trout, and char in freshwater. The use of bait is allowed only from September 15 to November 15. Only unbaited (no scents), artificial lures may be used during the remainder of the year. In fall-run steelhead drainages and high-use cutthroat trout lakes, only unbaited, artificial lures may be used year-round; bait is prohibited.

Sockeye salmon are notoriously closed-mouthed; however, smaller lures and flies will draw strikes from these finicky fish. Fly patterns for salmon, trout, and char can be found in numerous books and on the internet.

Whichever method you use to catch a salmon, trout, or char, you should consider having an adequate supply of tackle with you, as lures will be lost, and tackle shops may be great distances from where you are fishing.

Marine waters surrounding Prince of Wales Island support all five species of Pacific salmon as well as halibut, lingcod and rockfish. Common shellfish are Dungeness crabs and shrimp, with the occasional Tanner or King crab found in the crab pot. Most communities have either skiff rentals, or lodge and charter operations that offer saltwater day trips. Another option might be to try fishing from the shoreline along the coast or from a kayak. Saltwater fish species are usually pursued from May through September depending on the species. Dungeness crab and shrimp are taken year-round.

Saltwater fishing for cohoMost anglers catch salmon in salt water while trolling bait (usually pacific herring). Another technique is to find a school of salmon and work a lightly weighted jig or bait in the water column using an up-and-down motion called “mooching.” Fishing for halibut typically involves “soaking” a bait or jigging a heavier weighted lure just off the bottom of the sea floor. Lingcod and rockfish are also caught this way, but often rockfish will intercept the bait or jig as it is dropping to the sea floor.

Winter Fly Fishing Central California

Oxnard ideal base of operations for Ventura County visit   by Cary Ordway

Oxnard may not sound glamorous, but travelers looking for great Southern California beaches, lots of nearby attractions and reasonable prices would do well to consider this for a getaway.

Even though this part of Southern California boasts lots of sun, sand and scenery, the prices for your Oxnard getaway are likely to be a little less than more famous beach communities. And in today’s economic climate, that becomes a major consideration for many families who don’t want to entirely forego their getaways, but also want to be prudent about costs. Driving about 60 miles northwest of L.A. helps lower those costs.

Don’t let the suburban look and feel of Oxnard fool you. Oxnard is a rather bustling suburban city centrally located so that you can easily visit such attractions as the Reagan Library, the Paramount Movie Ranch or nearby cities such as Ventura or Santa Barbara. And about seven miles from our convenient location near the 101 freeway was the beach and nearby Channel Islands Harbor.

When you visit Oxnard, the primary attraction is that beach – a place we’ve visited on several occasions and never seen more than a few families and surfers scattered over a vast expanse of sand. While the surf can get a little busy because of the beach’s angle to the sea, that’s just another advantage for folks who prefer some wave action. As you explore the area, you begin to realize there are a lot of upscale homes along the beach areas and scads of public parks and access points.

You’ll want to check out Hollywood Beach where Clark Gable once lived and where Rudolph Valentino filmed a movie. In fact, such movies as Spartacus, Only You, It’s a Mad, Mad World, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and Back to the Future were all filmed at Hollywood Beach.

McGrath State Beach is where the bird-watchers flock, and you’ll especially enjoy the dunes at Mandalay Beach where you’ll also find jogging paths, volleyball courts and barbecue areas – kind of a Venice Beach for everyday families.

Down at Fisherman’s Wharf we enjoyed browsing the Ventura County Maritime Museum with its extensive collection of antique sailing ship models, maritime paintings and various sea-themed exhibits. There also are waterfront restaurants and shops down in this part of Channel Island Harbor.

After checking out the nearby attractions, we spent a little time basking in the sun poolside at the Courtyard Marriott Oxnard Ventura, a hotel with amenities that appeal to both the leisure traveler and the businessperson. Our king suite, with its two over-sized rooms, gave us plenty of room to stretch out and was especially convenient for us because we were combining business with pleasure – a nine-year-old who couldn’t wait to turn on a Disney movie full blast and a father who had business to conduct while on the road. Solution: separate the suite into a business side and a kid side. If you do have a smaller room, the hotel features an elaborate business center where you can work uninterrupted.

This Courtyard is full updated and has pleasant color schemes as well as lots of travelers amenities. The new fitness center, pool, lobby areas and service are all top-notch and befitting Marriott’s excellent reputation in the hospitality industry. Also, don’t miss the hotel’s full breakfast buffet offered each morning – it’s an amazing assortment of hot and cold dishes offered for one reasonable price.

This Courtyard is, in fact, a little bigger than most you’ve seen, and all of the rooms are especially spacious. The Plaza Grill restaurant offers breakfast, while lunch and dinner are served in the lounge, which is also a popular spot for business travelers to gather in the early evening. The hotel’s location is especially good if you want to use your stay in Oxnard to visit nearby cities and attractions. It’s quick to hop on the freeway north to Ventura and Santa Barbara, or south to the Reagan Library and Paramount Ranch.

Paramount Ranch was on our list of must-see’s this trip because we’d always wanted to visit a movie ranch – a place where they filmed westerns back in that genre’s heydays. Paramount Studios bought the 2,700-acre ranch back in 1927 and proceeded to use it over the decades to film major movies with many of the top-name stars of the 30′s, 40′s, and 50′s. Among the movies filmed at the ranch were Gunfight at the OK Corral, The Streets of Laredo, The Virginian, and Hopalong Cassidy Returns.

Paramount Ranch was later used for such television shows as The Cisco Kid, Have Gun Will Travel, the Rifleman, Bat Masterson and, more recently, Charlie’s Angels, Chips, the Dukes of Hazard, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and Diagnosis Murder.

Today the ranch is still used for occasional filming, but has been turned into a recreational park that is ideal for hikes and picnics and just enjoying the wooded hilly scenery in this part of the Santa Monica Mountains. The main attraction at Paramount is the western town that you can walk through — the scene for many a TV or movie western.

If you plan ahead, you can use Oxnard as your jumping off point for a trip to Channel Islands National Park – either half or full day excursions are offered. These magnificent islands are just off the coast and visitors will find they are completely isolated once the boat leaves them for a camping trip on one of the islands.

You can head out on the water by renting a kayak or paddle boat down at Channel Islands Harbor. During winter and early spring you can take whale-watching trips out of the harbor and you can go fishing or enjoy seeing dolphins and other sea life any time of the year.

Wine-lovers will enjoy the Ventura County Wine Trail, a progression of several different wineries, all relatively close by and plotted on a map for visitors to follow.

Drive about a half hour east from Oxnard and you’ll find the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, which we made a point to visit in Simi Valley. The library features a fascinating collection of artifacts, photos and records that help us to learn more about our former president.

The most spectacular exhibit at the library has to Air Force One, the plane used to fly Reagan on his historical trips around the world.

The Pearl Of The Pacific Northwest: Seattle Travel Information   by Elyse Morgan

The keystone of Puget Sound’s commerce and the origin of many alternative American trends is none other than the bustling Emerald City of Seattle. Secure your airfare to Seattle with cFares and discover why Bill Gates, Starbucks, Nirvana and the Space Needle made this metropolis their home. Travel in Seattle is as dynamic and diverse as its inhabitants. Enjoy the theater, mountain biking and the fish market all in one day with time left over to indulge in some excellent seafood dining.

Seattle quickly capitalized on the Yukon Gold Rush that swept the nation by establishing itself as the banking center for the newfound funds of the Pacific Northwest. This trend did not cease over the centuries as Seattle has become synonymous with major tech firms such as Boeing, Microsoft and http://Amazon.com. The affluence is now visible in the many public arts and architecture projects that have been established in recent years as well as the proliferation of fine and modern arts museums and performance art funding.

Get Out and About the Rainy City

Just as much as Seattlites seem to work, they love to get outdoors, rain or shine. Seattle offers an incredible Parks System for such a metropolitan city. Get your bearings in Kerry Park with its infamous view of Seattle’s skyline. Locate the Space Needle against the backdrop of Mt. Rainier and the rest of the Olympic Range. Take a jog along the Puget Sound at Golden Gardens Park, one of the last beaches that still allows bonfires, or you can cycle around the serenely quite Elliott Bay in Myrtle Edwards Park. Seattle also provides easy access to Washington’s Olympic National Park, which offers all kinds of recreational activities amid breathtaking lush green scenery.

Several specialized tours are offered of Seattle’s many sights and sounds. One of the more interesting is the Seattle Underground Tour, which leads you through Seattle’s “basement” underneath Pioneer Square. Between the resistant swamp lands and a fire that completely destroyed downtown in 1889, Seattle rebuilt itself over the original city layout (this time using brick and steel) creating an actual underground network. Several cruise lines offer a tour of Seattle’s coast or you may choose to exert yourself a bit more with a kayak tour.

Garage Grunge and Conspicuous Coffee Consumption

Seattle’s prosperity may be due in part to the caffeinated cosmopolites buzzing around the city. Thanks to the establishment of Starbucks, Seattle’s Best and Tully’s, Seattle quickly became the coffee capital of the country. The first Starbucks store is still a block away from the touristy Pike Place Market, where the famed fish merchants will toss your order to you, giving a whole new meaning to flying fish.

Seattle is also the birthplace to the popular Grunge movement, spawning Nirvana and a whole string of bands with similar sound and style. Cafés spotlighting free-styling poets and off-beat monologue performances sprouted out of the Grunge scene and still fill the Seattle air with funky lyrics and indie beats today.

Seattle today is an eclectic mix of high-tech industry, commercial consumerism, counterculture trends and (thankfully) Bill Gate’s generosity.
